Stack Awards 2017

Stack Awards 2017

by Stack Magazines

The 2017 Stack Awards were handed out in London last night. Now in its third year, the event has established itself as one of the most popular and important events on the indie magazine calendar. More than 200 magazine makers from around the world gathered to celebrate the winners and commended titles across 11 categories, ranging from Magazine, Editor and Art Director of the Year, Best Use of Illustration and Photography, to Student Magazine of the Year.

USA-based Anxy magazine — a bi-annual title devoted to mental health — was the only new magazine to win an award (Launch of the Year and Subscribers’ Choice). A wide range of seasoned indie favourites took home the other awards, including MacGuffin (last year’s Magazine of the Year), Eye magazine (for its 8,000 unique cover collaboration with MuirMcNeil), and cycling bible Rouleur (for Best Original Non-Fiction).

The range and quality of the winning magazines is testament to just how professional the indie magazine scene has become.

Newer titles featured heavily in the commendations, including ‘protest broadsheet’ Good Trouble (founded by magazine A-listers Richard Turley and Rod Stanley), underground music and club culture magazine The Move, and Migrant Journal (about the movement of people, goods, and information).

Judges included Gail Bichler (New York Times Magazine Design Director), Christoph Amend (Zeit Magazin Editor), Jeremy Leslie (magCulture), Jaap Biemans (Coverjunkie), and Will Hudson (It’s Nice That).

The Stack Awards is the only awards programme devoted to independent magazines. Run by Stack Magazines — a unique subscription service that sends a different surprise magazine each month — the Awards have become the barometer against which the scene is measured.
