Fresh Finger Fancies

Fresh Finger Fancies

by Rich Lyons

This weeks playlist was put together by Rich Lyons, a “self-taught internet surfer, lover of dogs doing human things and hoarder of vintage design ephemera”, he’s also a designer at Apple in California. We asked him a couple of questions about his musical tastes, which you’ll find below.

What do you want to hear more of in 2017?

I’m always craving more from a few of my favourite labels – Rhythm Section International, 1080p and Local Talk.

What do you want to hear less of in 2017?

I do pretty well at avoiding music I don’t like, but one thing that always takes me by surprise is any overuse of autotune/vocoder. There’s so much rap that relies on it when it’s so unnecessary!

What do you listen on?

Out and about, I swear by my Sennheiser CX300 in-ear phones. At home I have everything hooked up to an old Sony amp and some really nice sounding Wharfedale speakers I unbelievably picked up on eBay for about £6, years ago.

Where do you find new music?

I have a few go-tos, but most of the time I’ll scour Soundcloud for mixes, then discover a particular track that leads me to discover a new label. I tend to get obsessed with small independent labels and binge on their output for a few months before finding some other mix. Wash, rinse, repeat!

Guilty pleasure?

I have a playlist of Millennium-era trance bangers that I’ll put on for a nostalgia hit before remembering what the fuck I’m listening to. Usually around the 6-minute point of a track’s intro.
