Cover Profile: Mathieu Clauss

Part of FFF’s design has always been our custom cover image. The new site allows our collaborators a even larger space in 3 variations (desktop, tablet and mobile) to play around with. This month’s FFF cover image was designed by Mathieu Clauss, a freelance graphic designer from in Strasbourg in France.

Hi Mathieu, can you tell us a little about yourself.

Hi Glenn, I’m 29 years old and I’m a freelance graphic designer. After completing my art studies and a «BTS» in graphic design, I directly started to work on my own as a freelancer. This was 7 years ago (how time flies!) and I’m now based in Strasbourg, France.

I work for various types of companies: advertising agencies, digital agencies, start ups, restaurant owners, European institutions… My specialities are branding and digital design, but I also work on some illustrations in my free time.

How do you approach a new project?

It often starts with a series of Q&A with the client in order to better identify his graphic design culture and his expectations. Then I explore what is done elsewhere in the same field, in books or on the internet, and I collect various visual inspirations. I go through all this informations before starting the brainstorming and sketching part so as to find the best concept for the project.

What do you listen to while you work?

It depends a lot on my mood or the project. If I need to be focused on complex tasks, I will rather listen to something soft like Kevin Morby or The XX. On the other hand, for a boost or work that requires less attention I will be more into Gary Clark Jr. or Tame Impala.

What would be your dream project?

Interesting question! I would say that my dream project would be a combination of different criteria: a very positive and useful subject, with a great visual & graphic aspect and a part where I would be able to create some illustrations on a giant surface …. and with an unlimited budget 😉

Do you work from home or in an office?

I have a desk in a co-working space in Strasbourg that allows me to separate my work life from my private life, but I sometimes work from home when a I have days with a lot of phone calls or skype meetings.

What’s Strasbourg like?

Half-timbering houses, Winstubs, beer, choucroute, flammenkuch… but don’t be fooled, we are in France! Strasbourg lies on the German border, and it’s a perfect blend of both cultures.

Culturally vibrant and at human scale, it is also well known for its Christmas market and its European institutions as well as the countless bikes that invade the city every day. It’s nice to go to work by bike!

Thanks for taking the time Mathieu!
